The Road to London GT 2022 - Week 5: 28th Feb ‘22

Updated: Mar 21, 2022

5 weeks done already?! 29 weeks to go....

Moving through last weeks learning points I am seriously thinking about dropping Dormammu and putting in a 5 cost instead. For the points cost versus activations, I am struggling to justify him in my play style. I'll give it more thought over the coming weeks but the current standings for my tournament list remain the same though (for now):

Green Goblin, Lizard, Venom, Kingpin, Kraven, Mysterio, Dormammu, Doc Ock, Toad, and Black Cat. I really enjoyed how Black Cat played last week, I've yet to really gel with Toad though.

Tactics Cards: Advanced R&D, One-Two Punch, Fearful Symmetry, Well-Laid Plans, Brace For Impact, Med Pack, The Grand Illusion, Sinister Traps, Neogenetic Recombinator, Monkey Brain is Lizard Home.

No changes here either. I'm more than happy with the load out and how each card works.

Crisis Cards: Mutant Extremists Target U.S. Senators! (14), Research Station Attacked! (16), Spider-Infected Invade Manhattan (17) / S.W.O.R.D. Establishes Base on Moon (14), Mayor Fisk Vows to Find Missing Witnesses (16), Mutant Madman Turns City Centre into Lethal Amusement Park (18).

I'm keeping these the same too, although I am toying with less C maps. I've come across too many C/C games recently and they suuuuuuuck!

Without further ado, lets get in to it!

Game 10 - 3rd March 2022

VS - Jordan (Hulkbusters)

Research Station Attacked (16) / Deadly Meteors Mutate Civilians (19)

Hulkbuster, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, Taskmaster

Green Goblin, Kingpin, Lizard, Kraven, Black Cat, Toad

Jordan joins the ranks of the MCP crew this week. Sadly I haven't managed to get him to come to the GT (yet) but it was great to get him back playing MCP, I think for the first time this year? We played a tournament style game but it was clear that Jordan was unfamiliar with a lot of the new rule changes. Regardless we had some fun and I finally had my revenge on Hulkbuster (although Scott is adamant it wouldn't happen if he was piloting...).

I won priority so Jordan ran with a 19 threat crisis. Having lots of objectives on the field I instantly went wide, as is now my mantra, and gave Kraven his first run out. Deadly Meteors plays like Mutant Madman except using energy defence rather than physical. As my team has a 3 energy defence stat across the board I knew this was going to be a little rougher to secure the objectives.

I went with a rush tactic, swarming the closest objectives and Sinister Trapping the one nearest Hawkeye and Black Widow. Regular readers will know how much I love this card and this game it paid off big time. I lured Hawkeye away from Black Widow by presenting an easy target in the shape of Kingpin, Goblin, and Kraven taking the centre and leaving the trapped objective alone. Jordan was fully aware of what would happen but he still advanced Black Widow within 2. The resulting explosion caused 4 damage on the plucky spy, dazing her outright! Well done Kraven!

Jordan reacted well enough throughout the game, Taskmaster taking on the Researcher escort role exceptionally well. Backed up by Hulkbuster his central advance was nigh unstoppable and by turn 3 he was able to score 4 points. Stark dazing Kingpin with a meteoric punch in one activation did not help my situation in the slightest, but when Fisk came back... oh my. Goblin threw an incinierating pumpkin bomb at the giant mech and accompanied by a staggering headbutt followed by a Hail to the King saw a slightly damaged suit get dazed outright. That bald criminal is pulling his weight of late, and that is a significant amount of weight!

I really enjoy the tag-team feel of Osborne hitting an enemy with incinerate and then smashing everything into them with Kingpin. It has, in the past, resulted in a Daze or K/O guaranteed.

It was a great game that I believe has reignited Jordan's love for MCP, he's already challenged me to a rematch. I'm expecting Sam-Spam as he picked up the plucky leader right after our game!

Final Score 16-8 Spider-Foes. Turn 5

Game 11 - 4th March 2022

VS - Scott (Cabal)

S.W.O.R.D. Establishes Base on Moon (14) / Spaceship Crashlands (20)

Red Skull, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Toad, MODOK

Green Goblin, Lizard, Kingpin, Black Cat, Kraven, Doc Ock

As always, Scott aims to push the boat out with a varied and competitive list (which is why I like him as an opponent). I won priority again and as soon as the 20 threat turned up I knew it was going to be another wide game. Both maps were C, and they always end up being a slow scoring game, tactical game. Looking at Scott's roster though, I could guess that he was going to go aggressive.

I deployed in my standard manner, Kingpin and Goblin in the centre, Lizard on the flank, Doc Ock and Black Cat to prey on the weaker characters or support key areas. Felicia ended up left going after Toad, and Ock went right to support his fellow Doctor Connors, against Omega Red.

The first turn went as expected, Sinister Traps went off against a right flanking Omega Red who took 2 damage. Black Cat went up against Toad and they wrestled for control of the left console for the majority of the game. In the centre, Red Skull teleported Juggernaut right up to the centre objective and they both proceeded to lay the smack down on Kingpin and Goblin. Surprisingly they weathered the storm well and were able to get a bit of payback on both characters, actually dazing Marco in 2 turns! As mentioned earlier, Incinerate is amazing in a tag-team, love it love it love it.

Scoring went well throughout for me, stealing points from under the Cabal's nose when I could. Out Activating (my 6 vs Scott's 5) really helped, especially when I had Goblin and Kingpin dazed in Turn 2, then Lizard and Kraven dazed in turn 3! Lizard was able to hold on to the Power Core long enough to rack up enough points to keep me in the lead for most of the game, and the final turn saw an epic conclusion with Kingpin, Lizard and Kraven facing down Red Skull for the win. Juggernaut had spent his activation beating the snot out of Goblin and then throwing Kingpin closer towards Red Skull in an effort to K/O Black Cat. A cheeky play of Brace for Impact and Kingpin's inability to take damage in collisions really paid off.

A really great game for both of us, it had strategy, combat, destruction... everything a Marvel player could want. Scott forgot his affiliation a few times which cost him powering up quickly, and Juggernaut had a few duff rounds of combat. MODOK supported well enough but never really shined, and Omega Red played well enough but needed more poisoned support to really kick off. All my guys performed well, Goblin and Kingpin refused to go quietly into the night and Kraven really stood defiant in the face of overwhelming odds against both MODOK and Omega Red!

Final Score 16-10 to Spider-Foes. Turn 5

I'm keen to see what affiliations come at me next time as I've still not seen Doc Strange, X-Men, A-Force, Wakanda, among others. I'm always up for a game at Duke's Gaming, come get some.

Massive thank you to both Scott and Jordan this week, and to you for reading! See you next week true believers!
