The Road to London GT 2022 - Week 7: 14th Mar ‘22

"What the hell happened to Week 6!?!"came the cries from the true believers... Well I'm glad you asked! I genuinely couldn't get a game booked. It was nice in a way though as it was a well earned break from MCP after nearly 20 games in 4 weeks. I enjoyed Star Wars Legion, Blood Bowl, a DBS TCG competition, and a tipple of Bolt Action, all helped in refreshing the palate and getting me hungry for some more super hero shenanigans!

The list remains the same for now but I do have a bit of a surprise coming up in the coming weeks. Green Goblin, Lizard, Venom, Kingpin, Kraven, Mysterio, Dormammu, Doc Ock, Toad, and Black Cat remain in the Top 10. If someone is going to be fired though, who should it be? Answers on a postcard please.

Tactics Cards: Advanced R&D, One-Two Punch, Fearful Symmetry, Well-Laid Plans, Brace For Impact, Med Pack, The Grand Illusion, Sinister Traps, Neogenetic Recombinator, Monkey Brain is Lizard Home.

No changes here again this week.

Crisis Cards: Mutant Extremists Target U.S. Senators! (14), Research Station Attacked! (16), Spider-Infected Invade Manhattan (17) / S.W.O.R.D. Establishes Base on Moon (14), Mayor Fisk Vows to Find Missing Witnesses (16), Mutant Madman Turns City Centre into Lethal Amusement Park (18).

Still the same here too.

I managed to sneak a game in on Friday, the always delightful Huw joining me again at the table. I am now overjoyed to say that he is coming with me and David on the GT train and will be playing in London!

Game 12 - 18th March 2022

VS - Huw (Brotherhood of Mutants)

Mutant Extremists Target U.S. Senators! (14) / Mutant Madman Turns City Centre into Lethal Amusement Park (18)

Magneto, Juggernaut, Hulk

Green Goblin, Kingpin, Lizard, Kraven, Black Cat

We both underspent and each went for 17 threat on this game. Huw's excuse is that he played Gavin last week against a Hulk-based Avengers team and was awed by the big green giant. He was desperate to put Hulk and Juggers together with Magneto to quickly get into the centre and start clobbering! I ended up with 17 as I really wanted to give Kraven another run to test him further, otherwise I probably would have taken Venom (the game might have been a bit different then...ha!).

I won priority, so if you hadn't guessed by now Huw chose an 18 threat. Surprise!

With Hulk and Juggernaut taking the centre, Magneto on the left flank, I taunted Huw by throwing Goblin and Kingpin straight into the middle of the field. This worked a bit too well as Hulk threw Juggernaut right at them before stomping up to a safe house and securing the senator. Great, now a 20 health behemoth who gets stronger the more I hurt him has the main objective.

The game itself went really well considering I was going head-to-head with a physically strong team. It's situations like this that Spider-Foes work their best. High physical defence to survive the hits (kinda...) followed by Incinerate and picking on the worst of your opponents defence to knock them down. Hulk lasted longer than I would have liked, but having an Incinerate token from Gobbo, minus one defence for holding the senator, and Kingpin staggering him on turn 3 meant Hulk was truly picked on until his ultimate demise mid-game.

Lizard had his suicidal tendencies continued as he caught Juggers' attention for the majority of the game. As Hulk went down so did Connors, but he had tied up the rampaging mutant long enough for my scoring to have really kicked in.

Kraven and Black Cat had great fun zipping back and forth along the flanks interacting with the bombs and avoiding Magneto's gaze, but the icing on the cake came in turn 5 when dear old Felicia did what she does best. Expertly tracking her prey she was primed and in position turn 4, mid-table and only a short move away from the senator-holding Juggernaut. Turn 5 comes and the Black Cat strikes! Move, spend 3 power to yoink the HVT, move short (as per the crisis rule) and then spend 2 to Grapple Hook away leaving Juggers in the dust. Mic drop.

Seriously a great game. If this had been a double "C" map then I would 100% have been in a lot of trouble. Huw's lack of activations meant I could capitalise on any openings that were available and score quickly in big numbers. That being said, it hurt a lot to take on Hulk holding an objective so Huw played that one very well. I love the partnership between Hulk and Juggers, mix that in with maybe Mystique leadership and that would have made a very different game indeed.

Final Score 16-8 to Spider-Foes. Turn 5

Massive thank you to Huw for being awesome as always, it's great to see the fun lists you bring. Keep it up!

Much more of a "filler" week as the team does feel very settled at the moment. Big news is that I'll be entering the Duke's Gaming Store Championship on Saturday March 26th, so the next instalment will not be one to miss. The Spider-Foes are entering their first competition!

Thanks again for taking the time to read this. See you next week!
